All you need is a little bit of patience while the dough rises and that is it. Here is the easy focaccia pizza recipe with a dough that succeeds every time and all your favorite toppings on top.
Makes 4 focaccias
Ingredients:
300 g flour (2 cups plus 2 tablespoons)
One third of a packet of fresh yeast or half a tablespoon of dry yeast
Three quarters of a tablespoon of sugar
1 teaspoon salt
60 ml oil (one quarter cup)
160 ml lukewarm water (just under three quarters cup)
Toppings:
Ketchup
Sliced olives
Thinly sliced cherry tomatoes
Corn
Thinly sliced mushrooms
Purple onion cut into quarters
Cheese cut into small cubes or grated
Preparation:
-
1.) Place the flour, yeast and sugar in the mixer bowl. Mix lightly. Add the oil and water. Knead on low speed until the dough is soft smooth.
-
2.) Gather the dough into a ball. Place it in a greased bowl, cover and let it rise for about 30 minutes. On cold days, let it rise for at least one hour. The dough needs a little bit of patience.
-
3.) Divide the dough into 4 balls. Lightly oil each ball and stretch it to a length of about 20 cm. You want a long shape similar to a baguette but tastier.
-
4.) Press or flatten the center of the dough with your fingers to create a long groove. Spread ketchup or tomato sauce. Sprinkle cheese and your chosen toppings. (This is the part everyone fights over!) Sprinkle coarse salt and drizzle olive oil.
-
5.) Preheat the oven to 220 degrees Celsius (428 Fahrenheit). Bake for about 15 – 20 minutes until the focaccia turns golden and the vegetables smell amazing. The neighbors will already be on their way.
-
6.) Drizzle a little bit more olive oil and serve. It disappears in seconds.
Tips:
Heating: The focaccia is best when eaten hot straight from the oven. If you have leftovers heat them in a preheated oven at 180 degrees Celsius (356 Fahrenheit) for five minutes. You can also give the
focaccia a quick spritz of water and warm it in the microwave for 10 – 20 seconds to soften it.
Sauce base: For a richer sauce, mix ketchup or tomato sauce with a bit of dried oregano and a little bit of olive oil before spreading. It gives a deeper Italian flavor.
Using olive oil: Do not skip the drizzle of olive oil before and after baking. The oil is the key to authentic focaccia flavor and helps keep the dough flexible.
Creating the perfect base: It is recommended to lightly oil your work surface before stretching the dough. This prevents the sticky dough from clinging and lets you stretch it easily into the desired long shape without tearing it.
